Shri Krishna was the 8th son of Devaki and Vasudev. The king of Mathura city was Kansa, who was very tyrannical. His atrocities were increasing day by day. Once a voice came from the sky that the 8th son of his sister Devaki would kill him. Hearing this, Kansa put his sister Devaki in the dungeon along with her husband Vasudev. Kansa killed 7 children of Devaki before Krishna.

When Devaki gave birth to Shri Krishna, Lord Vishnu ordered Vasudev to take Shri Krishna to Yashoda Mata and Nanda Baba in Gokul, where he would be safe from his maternal uncle Kansa. Shri Krishna was brought up under the care of Yashoda Mata and Nand Baba. Simply, in the joy of his birth, since then the festival of Janmashtami has been celebrated every year.

Preparations

Temples are specially decorated on the day of Shri Krishna Janmashtami. There is a rule of fasting for the whole day on Janmashtami. On Janmashtami, everyone keeps fast till 12 noon. On this day tableaus are decorated in temples and Lord Krishna is made to swing and Rasleela is organized.

Dahi-Handi/Pot Breaking Competition

On the day of Janmashtami, the Dahi-Handi competition is organized at many places in the country. Bal-Govindas from all over take part in the Dahi-Handi competition. A pot filled with buttermilk-curd etc. is suspended in the sky with the help of a rope and the Bal-Govindas try to break the pot. Appropriate prizes are given to the winning team in the Dahi-Handi competition. The winning team that succeeds in breaking the pot is entitled to a prize.
